Sports Betting Legalization in Oklahoma Faces Critical Deadline Pressure

(Oklahoma).- The future of sports betting in Oklahoma hinges on a crucial May 8 deadline, as tensions between tribes and legislators influence the path forward for regulation.

Sports Betting Legalization in Oklahoma Faces Critical Deadline Pressure

Oklahoma lawmakers have only a few days before a crucial deadline to determine if the state has an opportunity to legalize sportsbooks.

May 8: The Pivotal Date for Oklahoma’s Sports Wagering Bills

The state legislature must act by May 8 to vote on two pending sports betting bills. If they fail to do so, Oklahoma will face at least another year without legalized sportsbooks. These bills aim to allow tribal casinos to operate sportsbooks, with the option to partner with third-party operators. One of the proposals also requires voter approval via a 2026 ballot initiative before sportsbooks can go live.

Governor Opposition and Tribal Disagreements Stall Progress

Governor Kevin Stitt opposes both bills because they exclude commercial operators. He supports a broader model including horse tracks, the state lottery, and other non-tribal entities. His stance has stalled progress, though the legislature could override a veto with a two-thirds majority in both chambers.

While the House passed both bills earlier this year, they have yet to appear on the Senate floor. If the Senate doesn’t vote by May 8, lawmakers may not revisit the issue until 2026. If the Senate modifies the bills, both chambers must agree on identical versions by May 30.

Ballot Measure Offers a Path Around the Governor

One bill includes a voter referendum, which could bypass the governor entirely. Supporters see this as a way to legalize sportsbooks without needing executive approval.

Since the U.S. Supreme Court lifted the federal ban in 2018, Oklahoma has debated sports betting legalization. Tribal leaders and lawmakers have struggled to align on a path forward. Tribes, who hold exclusive gaming rights, have pushed back on expanding access to commercial operators. This dispute has blocked legalization, even as 39 other U.S. jurisdictions move ahead.

Another bill, backed by the Oklahoma City Thunder and aimed at allowing team partnerships with sportsbooks, failed to advance past committee. Roughly 75% of the state is under tribal jurisdiction. Legalization could lead to dozens of in-person and mobile sportsbooks, especially within tribal casinos.

Top Sportsbooks Ready to Enter Oklahoma

FanDuel, DraftKings, Caesars, and BetMGM are expected to target Oklahoma if the state legalizes betting. Prominent tribes like the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, Cherokee, and Seminole are positioned to lead the charge.

As the May 8 deadline nears, the spotlight is on the Oklahoma Senate to decide the future of sports betting in the state.
